Houseboat

Berkeley, California, 2014

Featured Medium: Plywood

An adventurous client with a claustrophobic houseboat wanted cheap thrills to inspire the remodel of his floating home, which doubles as a photography and filmmaking studio. Medium Plenty delivered inventive solutions. They removed interior walls to expand the 360-degree view of the harbor. Plywood wraps created unifying horizon lines. Handmade woodwork was uncovered and restored, cheap fixtures were replaced with hunted-down vintage plumbing and raw brass custom lights.

Blown glass portholes allowed the entry of light off the water to dazzle floors and ceiling. Extra-deep denim-covered window seats and a pivoting table transform a single room into a multi-use lounge/eat/work space. Vibrant paint, Formica and kitsch wallpaper all remix into a 70s waterside life fantasy.
