Ian co-founded Medium Plenty with his wife Gretchen Krebbs, after earning his architecture degree, then spending years in the trenches of the construction trades. He now heads MP’s Architecture Department, where he applies his thorough understanding of what it really takes to build structures of integrity. Ian maintains a love of craftmanship and an admiration for the people who know how to use their hands. His building skills range from carpentry to custom plasterwork, and from wood and metal fabrication to concrete forming and pouring.
Ian is the trickster/sage of Medium Plenty. He engages in lively conversations, listens intently, brainstorms mightily, laughingly goes off the rails, and insists on having a good time especially when there are problems to solve. And he comes through. He got to put these invaluable skills on display for three years on a certain TV home design show. He still gets fan mail, admittedly from his daughter.
Ian and this imaginative daughter enjoy lively fantasy building sessions making pig robots that may someday fly (at least that’s the dream), and elaborate fairy houses that may someday be occupied by some sort of creature (mini flying fairy pigs?). Ian is also an avid cyclist, skier, boarder, hockey player and traveler.
My favorite medium is…Collaboration. The most beautiful projects are a result of connecting. I have a personal history with many materials, but none are really “my” medium. Where I really thrive is in conversation and interaction with people – clients, employees, friends, family. It’s where I learn the most and come up with solutions in real time.
