Little Giant
Oakland, 2015
Featured Medium: Fun
Located a block from the historic Fox Theater in Oakland’s Uptown District, Little Giant Ice Cream isn’t just a hip scoop shop. It’s also an operational facility with each stage of production in full view of customers, adding charm and engagement to the experience of enjoying cool mouthfuls of decadence.
Medium Plenty’s challenge was to convert a raw commercial space into this multi-purpose community hub. Inspiration came from old-school factories. MP created a glass and brick “building” in the center of the wide-open space that allows the public to watch the actual making of the product, from pasteurization through packaging. The fun of watching makers make extends to the scoop shop and retail experience. “Fun but not cliché” was the overall interior design theme that resulted in kid-sized picnic tables, the paint colors on sprinkler pipes and vintage robots watching over the playful mood inside.
