24th STREET
Mixed Use
Oakland, CA
2005
This project called for a complete renovation of a Victorian duplex and the creation of an additional ground floor. To achieve this, the building was lifted and substantial excavation was also needed to achieve the required height at street level. The exterior and interior of the new unit have a contemporary massing of concrete, glass and metal which anchor the more delicate details of the Victorian style above. The upper exterior was restored to its original quality and detailing while the interiors were modernized.

A need for additional space that could be accessed and utilized separate from the main house was the driving idea behind this project. The space of an existing carport was transformed into a separate living space and additional site work also allowed for a usable flat yard area for the family.
